Science Writing

AAS Nova

As the American Astronomical Society Media (AAS) Fellow, I regularly wrote summaries of scientific papers for AAS Nova, which publishes research highlights from AAS journals. Read more of my work here.

Astrobites

I've been a part of the Astrobites collaboration since 2018. Astrobites is a group of graduate students who take scientific papers and distill them into bite-size articles geared toward undergraduates. In addition to writing, I've edited multiple articles. I also served as the head of the Editorial Committee,  from 7/19-7/20 where I maintained the style of Astrobites and put editorial procedures in place. Read more of my work here.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory

After defending my PhD thesis in August 2022, I joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a full-time science writer for The Bulletin, the Laboratory's internal newsletter. Lincoln Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center. The goal of the Laboratory is to develop technology to meet national security needs, a goal that spans many areas, from air traffic control to space systems and technology to quantum computing. My job is mainly to write about technical projects being worked on at the Laboratory. I also write about noteworthy events such as awards Laboratory staff receive and outreach events the Lab puts on. Though my work mainly stays internal to the Lab, below are a few pieces that have been externally published.

Pulsar Outreach

Pulsars and Profiteroles Project

The Pulsars and Profiteroles Project is a passion project I started in 2020 that combines my hobby of baking with my passion for science communication. Each week, I bake a technical challenge from the Great British Baking Show and blog about my experience while talking about a topic related to pulsars.

#PulsarFriday

#PulsarFriday is a Twitter outreach activity I started to help share pulsar science through social media. Each week, I provide a poll with 3 pulsar-related topics and the topic with the most votes is talked about in a thread posted on Friday afternoon. Subjects of threads include the discovery of pulsars, pulsar polarization, pulsar planets, and more!

Check out the short video below on how pulsars are created!

WVU Planetarium

From May 2018 to January 2020, I served as co-coordinator of the WVU Planetarium. My main job was presenting public shows and field trips but I also took reservations, created new shows, wrote the quarterly newsletter, and managed the website. The planetarium helped me work on my science communication skills, as I presented similar shows to a wide range of audiences.
